What is the Black Desert?
The Black Desert (Sahara el Soda) is a stretch of hills capped with dark volcanic rock, with black fragments spread across lighter sand. It sits between Bahariya Oasis and Farafra, so it is often a stop on the road rather than a separate trip. Light is best early and late in the day, when the contrast between dark rock and pale sand is strongest.
What is the White Desert?
The White Desert (Sahara el Beida) lies north of Farafra Oasis and is famous for white chalk formations shaped by wind over a very long time, some resembling mushrooms or animals. Many visitors plan to be there for sunset and the stars afterwards. It is a protected national park, so follow your guide's instructions and do not break or take rock formations or fossils.
How long is the safari and how should I plan it?
Day trips, overnight camping trips and longer routes all exist, and the right choice depends on how much driving you want. Ask the hotel for the proposed route, the start and finish times, the vehicle, whether meals and water are included, and the final cost. A realistic plan leaves time to rest after the drive.
What should I bring?
Bring sun protection, a hat, sunglasses, closed shoes that cope with sand and a warm layer, because desert evenings and nights can be cold even when the day is hot. Carry enough drinking water, keep a charged phone and ask your guide about phone signal and the vehicle's safety equipment.
Can I add stargazing?
Stargazing can be added to a safari or arranged on its own. Visibility depends on weather, moonlight and season, so a clear sky is not guaranteed. A night with little or no moon gives the darkest sky.
Who is this guide for?
Use this guide to prepare questions before you request a safari. It is general information about the area, not a route itinerary, a price quote or a safety assurance. The hotel confirms the arrangements that apply to your stay.
